Seinnid - "Fox Creek Choir Recital"

Seinnid - "Fox Creek Choir Recital"

Using tape manipulation on found-sound recordings, the Vermont based artist Seinnid creates aural worlds created in the fragile shell of older worlds. Artists like AMULETS and Benoit Pioulard come to mind as Seinnid pulls these aching melodies out of these old recordings, a warbly, reeling tapestry unspooling at the edges. According to the press release, “"Fox creek choir recital" is an aural portrait of numbness as brought on by moments of overwhelming melancholy for that with which is no longer there. Though conjured by intense, placeable instances of upset and distress, this emotional space is somehow untethered to such circumstances. Almost acting as a safeguard, this space is tranquil, distant, and unconcerned with the corporeal. This piece began with a found cassette recording of a church service, occasionally interrupted by a singer, operatic in tone, and her keyboard accompanist. I pulled and tinkered with samples from this recording through cutting, re-arranging, re-pitching, reversing, and tape manipulation. The final product recontextualizes its source material, turning it into one such instance of numbness—a contemplation on your current state of being as refracted through a memory.”
