It’s hard to describe exactly what’s going on here or why it’s so incredibly effecting. Yasu Ey is a Japanese vocal performer playing the Japanese underground without releasing an album. “Sacred” was recorded live as one take. As far as I can tell there are no vocal effects, no processing, just Yasu Ey and a microphone. Yasu Ey’s voice croons, screams at throat-rending intensity, growls and lilts into laughter – almost within the same breath and as a punctuation to Yasu Ey’s labile emotional delivery. It’s intense, but also quite beautiful.
