The latest from Sahel Sounds, “Mouhamodou Lo and His Children” occurred as a once-off encounter where Mouhamodou Lo – a Senegalese taxi driver – offered to meet Karl Jonas (the Swedish producer and artist creating this project) in his studio so that Jonas could settle up with him after he forgot his wallet. This turned into an impromptu recording session with Lo and his children recording vocals over a shuffling, cosmic blues number. Lo’s children providing ad-libs while his voice drawls over the saxophone like a phantom. The result is a piece of ephemera dedicated to tape that transcends cultures and generations. A beautiful act of archiving built from basic human courtesy and wealth of musical and cultural knoweldge.
