While most “covid records” are decidedly bleak or incredibly schmaltzy, the Swedish indietronica group Walca take what, I believe, is the healthiest approach: a recognition that things are different but a deep belief in the constancy of the need for human connection. A belief in the elasticity of our social construct. This is expressed in Walca’s ability to marry post-rock elements like guitar arpeggios and sturdy bass line with heavy, agitated synths and a skittering beat palate low in the mix. It’s an effecting composition for this reliably great electronic project.
