Past Present & Tortusa set out for unexplored terrain of ambient jazz storytelling on their debut single “Black Mist”. The Norwegian trio is comprised of a trumpet, upright bass and live-sampling and create an ominous soundscape of plodding bass lines, sonorous bows and sampled/manipulated trumpet laying out elegiac lines that are fed back to the trio as mutated versions of themselves. “Black Mist” is subdued and contemplative, full of dark alleys and winding back roads that introduce new tonal passageways or instrumental lines. Fans of Ballrogg, Sult and Nick Malkin should take note.
