Taking cues from Laurie Spiegel’s masterpiece “The Expanding Universe”, Nick Schofield’s “Mirror Image” was written and performed on a Prophet-600 synthesizer during an Ottawa blizzard. Taking cues from the thousands of individual pieces of sky falling in random descending order, “Mirror Image” layers arpeggios atop one another until the definitions of each become indistinguishable on their paths to some known end. These arpeggiated lines bob and weave between one another, taking off and landing in regular intervals, but losing themselves in the process. A beautiful and stately piece by Nick Schofield. As I am listening to and writing this, I am watching the first snow arrive in Cincinnati, OH.
