An absolutely riveting collaboration between a percussive synth pattern and the mournful billow of a steel guitar, “Lokus” builds in general intensity while keeping a peaceful, ambient core. I am a big fan of artists who can harness the timbre-rich center of the steel guitar into soothing, ambient music. Denmark based artist Mikael Tobias is a fitting contributor to this tradition. As Tobias describes it, “The persistent states of expansion and contraction of life are mirrored in Lokus’s dance between rigid and fluid. Through constantly evolving textures and harmony, Lokus simultaneously allows the listener to drift away, while constantly bringing their attention back to the present moment.” Lovely work.
