In this stately and downright majestic composition by the Greek musician Thanos Christodoulou, “Doppler” tackles a knotty sense of Steve Reich rhythmic minimalism beneath a stirring neo-classical composition that starts and stops on a dime without any flagging momentum. The visual accompaniment by Theo Tagholm, a London-based artist who created the video “playing” with real images of the world and “breaking” the observer’s experience into slices of space and time, redefining every moment (and the sense of time) as a repetitive wave. Phases will be out this fall, but “Doppler” is a perfect intro into this exciting new work.
