On “Nothing Fancy” the UK based pianist Freya Lily utilizes hypnotic minimalism to achieve a a feeling of stasis among the intersecting piano lines. Using nothing but piano and analogue emulations of tape saturation to create a peaceful and ultimately hopeful piano composition. Building on what’s known as the “mere exposure effect” the way these lines closely follow one another, building on each other through each repetition creates a calming effect where we feel that we have encountered a this piece before. Our brain seeks and is soothed by the known and familiar. Great work from this solo pianist.
