The association of  Math-Rock with Emo has been one of the biggest misnomers I can think of. The idea of shoehorning the cold and calculated formatting of predictable formulas of a sub-genre built on an outpouring and overabundance of “emotion” seems a bit misleading. Acts like Floral – that build upon their predecessors finger-tapped guitar arpeggios, effects laden riffage, complex time signatures and rhythmic patterns – are filled to the brim with that unnamed, heart-in-your-throat over-exuberance that meets at the crossroads of heartbreak love found in community. Floral’s intricate melodies and extra-curricular effects make the case for this California duo as sub-genre standard bearers in the same vein as Toe, Pele and the unsung Dilute.
