the Cincinnati post-rock / jazz trio (post-rock like Tortoise not like Explosions in the Sky) explore several modes on their newest single “CNX”. These run from tight, syncopated grooves to mining open ended passages where Josh Jessen’s synthesizers and Stephen Patota’s guitar ping-pong of each with angular precision – making these miracle off-the-rim, blind alley-oop passes seem like calculated 4-D chess moves. This sort of group ESP is on full display as the rhythm and overall emotional texture of the song move from quiet and reflective to white-knuckle intense. Inspired by a trip to Chiangmai, Thailand and a motorcycle ride around the mountain Doi Suhtep, “CNX” pauses on occasion to take in the sights before taking off in its upward trajectory.
