By slicing together footage of the retro-futurist Bauhaus Ballet with the Berlin-based musician’s highly affecting synthesizer-based experimental composition, “Spit on the Altar” is an unsettling and hypnotic work that presents us with a vision of the future that we were sure contained metallic robots, contact with other life-forms that conformed to our notions of a vaguely mechanized leisure class. Doxa’s blending of komische beats and synths with altered woodwinds and voice creates a mysterious doubling effect. A ghost in the machine that all of our futurist prophets warned us would ultimately dismantle our systems.
