“Friend” by CTRO is described as “an energetic mix of live and sampled sounds run through the filter of personal experience, analog synthesis and probably some deep existential anxiety if we’re being totally honest.” It’s refreshing to hear that honesty as “Friend” – from it’s musicianship to unique editing relationship – sounds as if it is operating on some deeper understanding of how the world works. Drawing from obvious touchstones of Tortoise and Chicago Post-Rock, the group takes what could be a deep jazz groove and splices, edits and mutates the composition into something much more challenging and opaque. Snippets of woodwinds, percussive instruments and a deep bass line permeate the composition – surfacing and then recycling into the song’s masterminded structure that exists in the mind of the composer.
