Growing from a loose-limbed Kraut groove, Bay Area artist Chris Portka builds a towering cacophony on “Pad”. A swirling, thick drone cuts through the intersecting melodic and controlled demolition percussion. Settling into an auxiliary role as the song slowly gains its structure, the omnipresent drone is never far away, now bending and twisting into new shapes between notes and fragments of melodicism. Lovely work and of definite interest for fans of the noisier side of American improvised music. Fans of Rangda, Chris Corsano + Bill Orcutt should take note.
