loverghost - "there was a hole here"

“there was a hole here” by loverghost is full of these wonderful, warbly synth sounds that sound like they were composed in the dead of night. Disembodied ghost vocals float in from the rafters. Fans of Madeline Johnston’s early work as Sister Grotto should take note. According to the press release, loverghost share their creative process, “Recorded in 2018, this composition began a few years of composing for short horror/thriller films and video games. I had this practice where I would write a chord progression I enjoyed, then program the notes on the minilogue sequencer to arpeggiate randomly at a high speed and record them to tape for 2 minutes, occasionally modulating a filter or envelope. I’d switch the tape speed to half/quarter and just sit and listen for a while. The random, fast arpeggiations would sound like they were given purpose, and my careless synth tweaks sound like dynamic moments. Sometimes I did this late at night, and the fragile sound of the notes compressed and distressed by the tape could move me to tears. I loved playing along to these recordings to see if I could lean into their happy accidents. These arpeggiations appear throughout this EP.”
