Videodrone: Hurricane - "MS MR"

So, straight forward pop is the game here. I know the hipsters will get their sequined undergarments in a bind over my comparisons, but they wouldn't know culture if it crawled up their butts and laid eggs. I hear a basic Kelly Clarkson format throughout, with some husky soulful vocals and a mildly bombastic tempo. Synthier and clunkier, but definitely fit for airplay on an FM station (didn't say that was a bad thing). In fact, if we're going to split hairs (and why wouldn't we?), it really resembles that one Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians song. You know the one.

But visually, it's a mind-EFF. A halted stop-motion aesthetic slithers me in, as flashing images of Kraftwerk, the MTV logo, Darth Vader waving the American flag, two ballerinas groping each other on a couch and WHAT?! Was that Daria? OMG. It was. Daria and her angular counterpart Jane Lane. 1:06. Now this shit's been opened up like "woah!" dawg.

See, Daria is the only cartoon character that I can confidently say I've been sexually attracted to (to which my roommate will say "What? No Jessica Rabbit?") That deadpan delivery. Those boots. The incessant one liners and the Mark Twain nightie she wears in the episode where she stays at Jane's house. Think Jeanine Garafolo if Jeanine Garafolo was sexy and not unbearable. It was conceived in an era when adolescent cartoons were a real "thing" and aimed to showcase real teen problems with lots of heart and a bitchin alt-rock soundtrack...and a permanent fixture of my personal development.

Anyway, now I'm in this video whole-hog. (Just spotted a Beavis and Butthead title card too). The line "Welcome to the inner workings of my mind/so dark and foul I can't disguise" works, as the frenetic pacing of this is akin to a human brain emptying itself out. (Just spotted the Jesus and Mary Chain album cover Psycho Candy). How'd they get all this stuff? The internet is amazing. Bloody letters. Deteriorating skeletons. Nazi occultism? Maybe.
